During GoPro’s quarterly earnings call on May 8, CEO Nick Woodman delivered a mix of news for GoPro enthusiasts. He confirmed that all-new products are in development for 2026, but also announced delays for the anticipated Max 2.

This announcement could make 2024 a challenging year for GoPro, especially with the new Insta360 X4 raising the bar in the 360-degree camera market. In our review of the Insta360 X4, which boasts 8K capabilities, we awarded it a five-star rating. It seems poised to dominate the 360-degree camera market until at least Q4 2024, which is the latest projected release window for the GoPro Max 2.

Nick Woodman outlined GoPro’s plans for the next three years, including a broader range of products. “Due to the development process taking longer than expected, the launch of our new entry-level camera will be pushed from Q2 to Q3 in 2024, and our new 360 camera will be delayed to late Q4,” he stated.

The GoPro Max 2 will mark a five-year gap since the original Max’s release in October 2019. During this period, Insta360 has launched four iterations of its flagship 360-degree cameras, culminating in the impressive X4 model in 2024.

For those eager for a new 360-degree camera now, the X4 is the best option available. We’ll have to wait until the end of 2024 to see if the Max 2 can compete with Insta360’s flagship.

Woodman’s announcement also hinted at exciting developments for GoPro, including the most extensive product lineup in the company’s history, expected by 2026.

Brighter Days Ahead for GoPro?

In his earnings address, available in full on The Motley Fool, Woodman expressed optimism about GoPro’s future: “In 2026, we expect to have the broadest, most differentiated lineup in our history. We’re developing a full spectrum of specialized, diversified products to meet consumers’ capture needs in more convenient and enjoyable ways than ever before, with price points ranging from entry-level to professional.”

Woodman emphasized that GoPro aims to grow with innovative capture solutions rather than competing with generic digital imaging products. “We see a long runway of new specialized products that can integrate with our software solutions, establishing GoPro as the world’s leading alternative capture company,” he said.

These new products could include tech-enabled motorcycle helmets, following GoPro’s acquisition of Forcite Helmet Systems in February 2024. This acquisition positions GoPro to tap into the $6 billion motorcycle helmet industry, with products expected to launch in 2025 featuring integrated GoPro camera technology.

Speculating on what other new action cameras GoPro might release in 2026, we consider gaps in their current lineup, such as a competitor to the Insta360 Go 3. However, if GoPro stays true to its promise of avoiding “me-too” products, we will have to wait to see what unique innovations they introduce.

The next two years feel crucial for GoPro, and many are hoping the company will deliver exciting new products to regain its former prominence in the market.
