Canon PowerShot’s Unexpected Revival

After a period of dormancy, Canon has made an unexpected return to the compact camera market. In May 2023, they unveiled the PowerShot V10, a new vlogging camera. Now, it seems Canon was just getting started, as they have introduced an intriguing new concept for the PowerShot V.

Debut at Photo Next Show 2023

The innovative camera was showcased at the Photo Next Show 2023 in Japan. Photos of the device were shared on Twitter by attendees, including @wistaria_ and Ichiro Uematsu. The design resembles the PowerShot V10 but features dual lenses positioned back-to-back. The rear lens can fold out to the front, thanks to a hinged mechanism, reminiscent of the Insta360 Evo, a versatile 180-degree 3D VR and 360-degree camera.

Technical Design and VR Integration

While specific technical details are still under wraps, images suggest the concept camera has twin fisheye lenses, each offering approximately a 180-degree field of view. The hinge allows the rear lens to swivel to the front. In one configuration, these lenses provide 360-degree coverage. Alternatively, the lenses can work together as a stereoscopic camera, capturing 180-degree 3D VR images similar to the Insta360 Evo.

Canon has shown increasing interest in the VR market. Last year, they released a dual fisheye lens for 180-degree 3D VR, designed to work with the EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera. This setup uses the camera’s 8K video resolution to produce two 4K images, one for each eye of a VR headset.

Expected Specifications and Market Position

If the new concept camera is priced similarly to the PowerShot V10, it is unlikely to feature a high-resolution sensor or 8K video recording. It will probably include a 1-inch sensor with 4K video capability, delivering Full HD output for each eye. While it’s possible it could have twin 4K sensors, this seems less likely given the design.

Although 4K video for each eye through either an 8K sensor or twin 4K sensors would be ideal, Full HD 3D VR imagery is more probable. We’ll have to wait for more details.

A New Direction for Canon?

Canon’s strategy for compact cameras appears to be focusing on innovation. The V10 is positioned as a strong competitor to the Sony ZV-1, offering a dedicated vlogging design despite slightly outdated technology. Traditional point-and-shoot PowerShot cameras struggle to compete with modern smartphones, but a dual fisheye lens camera for mixed reality photos and videos presents a unique alternative that doesn’t require a head-mounted display like the Apple Vision Pro.

There are also rumors from Gizmochina about Canon collaborating with a smartphone manufacturer. In May 2022, Xiaomi and Leica announced their partnership, leading to impressive results like the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. While the details of Canon’s potential partnership remain unclear, such a move would signify a significant and forward-thinking shift for the traditionally insular camera company.
