Apple Unveils Enhancements for tvOS 18 at WWDC 2024
At WWDC 2024, Apple announced a suite of new features coming to tvOS 18, the next version of its Apple TV 4K operating system. These enhancements are currently available to Apple developers in a tvOS 18 beta version and are slated for an official release later this fall. You can follow our WWDC 2024 live blog for the latest updates.
InSight for Apple TV App
A major highlight is the introduction of InSight for the Apple TV app. Similar to Amazon Prime Video’s X-Ray feature, InSight provides onscreen information about characters, actors, and background music tracks for Apple TV Plus movies and shows. This data can be accessed in real-time and is also available when using an iPhone as a remote to control the Apple TV 4K.
Enhanced Dialogue Feature
The Enhance Dialogue feature is getting an AI-driven upgrade in tvOS 18 to improve the clarity of voices over background noise and music during movies and TV shows. According to Apple, Enhance Dialogue can now be used with built-in TV speakers, HomePod, HDMI-connected speakers, AirPods, and other Bluetooth devices.
Screen Savers, FaceTime, and Apple Fitness Plus
Other enhancements in tvOS 18 include new screen saver modes and improved accessibility for FaceTime calls. The new screen saver options feature a Portraits mode that uses photos from your library, customizable with text, color, and graphics. Additionally, there’s a TV and Movies option showcasing select scenes from Apple TV Plus content and a Snoopy and Woodstock animation for Peanuts fans.
FaceTime calls on tvOS 18 will now support live captions in English, enhancing accessibility by allowing users to read as well as listen to conversations. This feature will be available only in the US and Canada.
The Apple Fitness Plus app is also getting a redesign in tvOS 18, introducing a personalized For You space, enhanced awards, and extended search features.
Device Compatibility
Apple has not yet specified which Apple TV devices will receive these upgrades, but it is expected that the latest Apple TV 4K (2022) will be among the beneficiaries.
